PATTONVILLE, IL (KTVI)-- Fox 2 has learned the Pattonville Fire Protection District is reviewing a letter from the owners of the Bridgeton Landfill. Republic Services is asking that someone else represent first responders in meetings about conditions at the landfill.

Local and state leaders participate in a weekly conference call with folks from Bridgeton Landfill. They cover various issues including the movement of the underground smoldering event. This week, the Pattonville Fire Protection District received this letter asking that they remove Assistant Fire Chief Matt Lavanchy from the discussion.

Republic Services has agreed to construct a barrier between the Bridgeton Landfill and the radioactive material buried at Westlake Landfill. It’s considered a critical conversation in those conference calls. But the area president of Republic Services wants someone else on the call representing Pattonville.

He says:
"Chief Lavanchy has posted theories and rumors on social media and shared the same with television media creating unnecessary fear and panic."

He goes on to request: "A new liaison who shares goals of safety, preparedness and a commitment to open and honest communication with our neighbors be appointed on behalf of the Pattonville Fire Department."

We are still waiting for a response from Pattonville.

And there is another development Friday. Attorney General Chris Koster and Republic Services have agreed that more carbon monoxide monitoring will be done on gas extraction wells in the north quarry. This is the area closest to West Lake. The previous requirement was for CO data in the south quarry.

The agreement was accepted by St. Louis County Judge Michael Jamison. The first submission of data from the north quarry is due on or before February 20th and again in 60 day intervals until June, when a full hearing is set on the state's lawsuit. In a statement, Republic Services says the new data will be forwarded to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

Matt LaVanchy should stay right where he is. He does not NEED to fear-monger. There is plenty to be afraid of without him having to stir anything up! Perhaps Republic would be better served to focus on figuring out how to clean up their mess than on shooting the messenger.

Matt is the fire departments designated spokesperson, so he is the only one from the department that you hear about in the media but the entire department supports us. Matt is doing a GREAT job, the city of Bridgeton is very lucky to have him. Republic just wants everyone involved to be as selfish and conniving as they are so that they dont look like the only big idiot bully in this situation…..well sorry Republic but we dont have any selfish and/or conniving fire fighters!

Ah the ole discredit the fire chief bit. I figured it was just a matter of time before Republic went to that low. It’s not the first time Republic has published discrediting remarks about a person so knowledgeable and expressing the truth. Remember their slander against the landfill expert? I wonder when they will slander one of the many politicians that are helping the St Louis community or the senior nuclear weapons inspector and nuclear policy advisor to the Clinton administration Robert Alvarez who was here telling us how dangerous this nuke stuff really is. Republic says fire chief is spreading fear. I say, education and truth. The words you choose are important. Is it a fire or a smoldering event?
Republic is getting desperate. They see that they are in big trouble now. They see that this could eventually lead to their downfall.

100% behind Matt! Republic is just grasping at straws. Get rid of the waste and there won’t be these issues

100 % behind Matt and 1st Responders . . . . wow a burning waste dump with illegally dumped WW II atomic bomb waste . . . . spreading “fear” I side with the people fed up with Republic Services and the lap dogs trying to cover up their mess . . . US Government FUSRAP waste should be a US Government FUSRAP site . . . illegal dumping shouldn’t change that fact. And we know that ionizing radiation causes cancer and birth defects . . . fact. CLEAN IT UP.

  • Melissa

I still can’t believe after everything we have learned about this waste that Republic is sticking to it’s all ok. How inhuman can you be! After what the health survey results were with the 3 cancers being reported 37 appendix cancers statistically impossible 1 in 1,000 cases reported in a year. Thyroid cancer, leukemia. That’s why the community needs people like Matt Lavanchy protecting them. We support Matt Lavanchy 100%!

He goes on to request: “A new liaison who shares goals of safety, preparedness and a commitment to open and honest communication with our neighbors be appointed on behalf of the Pattonville Fire Department.”

Right – because Republic was prepared and reported the landfill fire almost two years after it started. Right, Republic is open and honest, but the Attorney General has to force them to disclose air monitoring information to the public. Right – Republic is so concerned about the neighbors – if that’s the case, give us free health screenings for the people who need it. This shouldn’t be a problem, since there is nothing wrong, right?

If anything, Matt Lavanchy should be running Republic! He is prepared and committed to safety of this community and others. Keep up the awesome job Matt – we are all here to support you, just as you are supporting us!
