ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - Know before you go:  delays for drivers trying to get out of downtown St. Louis this weekend.  MoDOT is completely shutting down a stretch of Interstate 64/Highway 40 westbound.

At midnight Saturday, MoDOT crews completely shut down the westbound lanes between Ewing and Kingshighway for utility work near the Tower Grove area.  MoDOT is also closing the ramps from Pine, Jefferson, Market and Grand onto I-64/40 west.  MoDOT is advising drivers to use I-70, I-44, or I-55 this weekend to get out of downtown.

The detour for I-64/40 west will be to get off at Forest Park Avenue then follow Forest Park to Kingshighway and get back on the freeway at Kingshighway.  All of the lanes and ramps are set to reopen by 5:00am Monday.

There has been a lot of work going on in the area of the Tower Grove Avenue Bridge over I-64/40. This is all part of an ongoing project to improve the flow of traffic around Kingshighway and into the Barnes and Washington University medical campus.

Those heading down to the St. Louis Auto Show  at America's Center should plan for an alternative route home.

Why is it so often with road traffic issues, especially pending closures, do we see pictures of the area, often showing construction equipment and a reporter, when what’s really needed is a map explicitly showing the area to be closed/affected and details of the detour? The latter would be helpful. The former only requires more research unless one is very familiar with the area being discussed.
