ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – Ameren Illinois is warning customers about scam artists.  The utility says, “Scam artists are going to great lengths posing as Ameren Illinois representatives either demanding an immediate electric or natural gas payment or trying to obtain banking information to return an over payment the customer has made to Ameren Illinois.”

Ameren offers several tips combat scammers.  Ask for official Ameren identification before letting someone into your home.  Hang up if a caller demands immediate payment, requests bank information or threatens to disconnect your service. Imposters will generally only accept one form of payment.  Ameren Illinois accepts several methods to pay a bill.

Call 1-800-755-5000 if you suspect someone is trying to scam you.
