ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – New trees are taking root this morning all because of Mardi Gras. St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay and other officials got out their shovels and planted 160 trees in Soulard, to improve the neighborhood.

Money for the trees comes from the Mardi Gras Foundation, which has donated more than $300,000 in grants to Soulard and Downtown over the last ten years. Proceeds from the Mayor’s annual Mardi Gras Ball fund the community grants.

This year’s Mardi Gras Ball is February 28th.
