(KTVI) – Would you be willing to contract the swine flu for money?  Plenty of people are lining up to participate for a new research project by the  National Institutes of HealthVolunteers are being paid  $3,000 for their time.

According to National Public Radio subjects were injected with a laboratory-synthesized version of the H1N1 strain of swine flu.  This is the same strain that kicked-off a world-wide pandemic that sickened millions and contributed to the deaths of more than 18,000 people.  Researchers are now trying to see how much of the virus it takes to make people moderately sick. Larger and larger doses were given to seven successive groups of volunteers. The last group got the highest dose.

Scientists still don’t know a lot about how the flu causes people to get sick. These studies have been done before in the 1990s.  Now, researchers have a lot more tools in their arsenal.  Recent advances in genetics are helping them track the ways viruses evolve in people’s bodies.
