CHESTERFIELD, MO (KTVI) – Potential traffic troubles are coming to the Chesterfield Valley.

It starts Monday night with a bridge closure and expands this Friday night with complete shutdowns of Interstate 64/Highway 40 in two places.

MoDOT is demolishing two bridges and preparing for what could be significant traffic tie-ups.

The Chesterfield Parkway West Bridge over I-64/40 near the Chesterfield Mall closes at midnight Monday.

It will remain closed for the next four months while crews tear it down and build a new bigger and better bridge.

“We’re widening the bridge from five lanes to eight lanes. We’re also providing eight-foot sidewalks on both sides which matches the system that’s on the parkway already,” explained MoDOT area engineer Michelle Voegele.

That bridge isn’t the only one over I-64/40 coming down.

Crews are also preparing to demolish the old Chesterfield Airport Road Bridge. A brand new one right next to it is almost ready to open.

Both of the older bridges are being demolished this coming weekend.

To do that, MoDOT has to completely close I-64/40 in the two areas where the bridges are coming down.

The closures start at 8:00pm Friday. All lanes on I-64/40 should open by 5:00am Monday.

The bridges are about five miles apart and I-64/40 will be open between the closure areas.

There will be detours to get drivers on and off the highway. But there could be backups.
“Anytime that there’s a full interstate closure and we’re detouring traffic off the interstate, there is potential for congestion and stop and go traffic,” explained Voegele.

Voegele says MoDOT is encouraging drivers to use alternate routes, “Motorists need to be paying attention. If you can take a detour, we highly encourage you to take a detour. Otherwise we’ll get you through there as quickly as possible.”

The new Chesterfield Parkway West bridge is being built in conjunction with a new headquarters building going up for the Reinsurance Group of America.

The headquarters is very close to the bridge. The business is promising to bring 300 new jobs to the area.

If that doesn’t happen, MoDOT officials say the business will pay them $13,000 for every job short of 300.

The business is also paying about $100,000 for beautifying the area around the new bridge.

MoDOT is paying $4.2 million for the new Chesterfield Parkway West Bridge.
