Jackie Joyner-Kersee helps launch caregiver initiative

NEW YORK (KTVI) – Olympian and East St. Louis native Jackie Joyner-Kersee was in New York this past weekend to help kick-off the Black Women’s Agenda to launch its initiative to assist African American caregivers care for elderly family members.

A recent AARP survey shows a high rate of infirm and elderly family member occur in African American households that care for someone over the age of 18, with 66% of those families caregivers holding down a full or part-time job.

The campaign to families will be rolled out to 15 American cities, including St. Louis; will provide information on health, financial, legal matters, and how to protect their mental health due to the strain from care-giving.
