UNIVERSITY CITY, MO (KTVI) - The storm has passed and the clean up is underway. The day after a tornado left behind significant damage to their neighborhood, University City residents will spend Friday picking up the pieces.
There were some scary moments Thursday night for the folks in U. City as they had to go through a second tornado warning after the tornado that did extensive damage at 5:20 a.m. Thursday morning.
Many people were sleeping when the F1 tornado rolled through Thursday. They barely had time to make it to their basements. In fact, several residents said the sirens didn't go off until after it was all over.
Governor Jay Nixon toured the area just hours after the storm. A gas leak forced more than 50 residents to be evacuated. Laclede has since repair the leak. A total of 94 homes in University City were damaged in the storm. Twenty of those were condemned.
Police still have McKnight Road closed between Olive and Old Bonhomme.
The American Red Cross helping victims of the severe storms. Red Cross volunteers are providing supplies at the Heman Park Community Center on Pennsylvania Avenue in University City.
You can get items like blankets, coffee, water and snacks. Disaster teams are also conducting damage assessments throughout the area.
