ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)-- St. Louis City Water Division crews spent all day working to repair a twenty inch water main in the 64-hundred block of Lindenwood near Chippewa Thursday.

The 80 year old pipe broke overnight flooding the street and a portion of the intersection at Chippewa.  Some fifty households lost water service due to the water main break.

Workers used a backhoe to dig seven to eight feet down to reach the damaged pipe.  It was to be replaced with a Teflon lined metal pipe section.

St. Louis Water Commissioner Curt Skouby said the repair work would take eight hours.  Residents affected by the pipe break were to receive instructions for temporarily boiling their drinking and cooking water.  Water Division staff were to hang the information on their front door knobs.
