U.S. Chess Championships kick off in St. Louis

(KTVI) - The U.S. Chess Championships kicked off in St. Louis this week.  The event is the "Superbowl" of chess.

It's the 6th year in a row that the event has been in St. Louis.  About a dozen Grandmaster chess players are participating.

There will be live play-by-play on the web.

"It is an exciting thing to be a part of," Grandmaster Maurice Ashley said.

The first round starts at 1 p.m. Thursday at the St. Louis Chess Club on Maryland Ave. in the Central West End.

Tickets are $10.
