DOWNTOWN ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR)-Saturday dawned with a warm and sunny morning for St. Louis' biggest 5K run of the year. About 8,000 runners were expected to participate in the Girls On The Run race.

That also meant there were some major street closures in the downtown area through the midday hours. Olive or Market Streets were the most affected.

The Girls On The Run organization is made up of girls between the third and eighth grades and combines coursework and physical fitness activities to help these kids bolster self-esteem and self-development. They do community service work as well.

A shorter one mile run began at 7:45 and the 5k kicked off at 8:45.

To my sister Jayne Thomas Hull- Thanks for helping me get back into running, after all my back issues and not being able to do what I love most(running) anymore, I know now that I can and will continue to do what I love and encourage my niece that she can accomplish anything and everything that she desires! Thanks again for introducing me to this run!
      Love Kellie
