ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)-- Amanda Arapovic rounded up some friends Tuesday morning to help out her family thousands of miles away.

"I have a sister down there and I talked to her this morning," says Amanda Arapovic.  "They're doing okay.  They don't have as much as the others but they have a little bit."

Arapovic`s sister lives in Bosnia-Herzegovina where southeastern Europe has seen the worst flooding in more than a century.

A million people are without drinking water and 100,000 homes destroyed.

Tuesday at the Bosnian Chamber of Commerce, there was an outpouring of support for their former homeland.

"Baby clothes, we need food, linens, shoes, anything whatever could help out that would be great," says Arapovic.

Meanwhile off Meramac Street, Erna Grbic has been keeping in touch with her grandmother still in Bosnia, while her family restaurant collects items to help.

"Their economy wasn't strong enough to begin with this natural disaster, it's even harder for the families to rebuild and start from scratch again, especially since they already started before because of the war," says Erna Grbic.

The Bosnian Chamber of Commerce and the United Bosnian Association had a meeting Friday that soon spread among the 70,000 Bosnians that call St. Louis home.

"We just kind of took off on social media from there," says Grbic.  "By Sunday the effort was huge.  We had hundreds of volunteers and truckloads and containers full of items donated just over the weekend."

There`s still time to donate through this weekend before the items will be shipped and flown overseas to help aide in the flood relief.
