GODFREY, IL (KTVI) – An Illinois real estate broker says a California client is interested in building medical marijuana grow farm in Godfrey.   Illinois recently legalized medical marijuana.  The state will allow one cultivation center in each state police district.

“All the surrounding communities need to get ahead of this and figure out how they’re going to deal with it.,” real estate borker Rick Laushke.
Laushke said he’s not taking positions on the law.  He just wants to know how to advise his client.

Some citizens attending Monday’s Village meeting applauded when one business owner spoke in opposition to medical marijuana grow farm.
The city attorney advised the village board against passing an ordinance prohibiting medical marijuana grow farm because it would be in violation of state law.  The mayor said the village could use zoning ordinances to try and regulate any cultivation center.

“If you don’t want it, you’d have to zone it in a way that would make it difficult for it to come,” said Mayor Mike MCCormick.  “If you do want it, then you make that path a little bit easier.”

State regulations prohibit a cultivation center from being with 2,500 feet of preschools, day cares, primary and secondary schools and residential areas.  Laushke believes the regulation would make it very difficult to find property in Godfrey that could be used for a medical marijuana grow farm.

I think the client should have engaged assistance to be able to present the proposed in a favorable manner instead of his attorney to the audience. Someone to inform the local opposed their stance is preventing numerous local jobs, and increased revenue from employee’s to the very business owners who speak against it, as well as guidance that land improvements actually increase the value of their properties, not the opposite. If this matter was addressed correctly, and the true benefits and facts presented about the proposed, it may very well have been better received.
