Children reunited with mother after Festus police chase turns to hostage situation

FESTUS, MO - A stick-up at a Steak N' Shake led to a police chase and hostage situation in Festus on Wednesday.

Police received a call that a man was flourishing a weapon at the restaurant at around 10pm. The were told the suspect left the scene in an Oldsmobile Alero. They found the vehicle near the intersection of Veterans Blvd and Collins Avenue afer a short search.

The car had been stolen from a Hardees in DeSoto. When police tried to pull the vehicle over the driver accelerated. A chase started down Collins and continued on to West Main where the vehicle crashed into a church at the intersection of Harrison Lane ans South Adams.

According to a release from police the driver of the vehicle got out of the car and ran towards the Festus Garden Apartments. The suspect then forced his way into an a apartment where a woman lived with her two children. Police officers then surrounded the building and began an evacuation.

The mother came out of her apartment during the evacuation and told officers that the suspect would not let her children go. The suspect was then contacted by phone for negotiations. Police say the suspect initially indicated that he was going to harm himself and the children if the police did not leave the scene.

Festus Police say the suspect let the children go after a half hour of negotiations. He finally surrendered after an hour of talking to police.

The children were reunited with their mother.
