ALTON, IL (KTVI) - A towboat sank in the Mississippi River Friday morning near Alton, IL. The Alton Fire Department received a call from the Coast Guard about a tow boat in distress and taking on water around 10:30am. When they arrived, the boat had already sunk. Everyone on board the got off safely prior to the sinking. There were no injuries.

The towboat went down in the river channel just south of Lock and Dam 26 and north of the Lewis and Clark monument near Route 3.

The tow boat is leaking diesel fuel and oil.  A hazmat container, a rigid floating tube, has been placed around the tow boat to skim or capture the leaking fuel and oil. A special crew is being called in to retrieve the boat off the bottom of the river.
