(KTVI) - You can learn your HIV status for free at the National HIV Testing event in Illinois.

Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control estimate about 20% of Americans living with HIV do not know they are infected. But, researchers also say those who know they are HIV-positive are less likely to spread the virus that causes AIDS.

Larry Mayhew of the Ryan White HIV-Aids Program for the Southern Illinois Healthcare Foundation said the agency has seen a rise in HIV among African-American men. About a quarter of newly-diagnosed patients are African-American women.
