Saint Louis Zoo joins honeybee health effort
ST. LOUIS (AP) _ The Saint Louis Zoo is joining a national coalition of commercial agriculture producers, conservation groups and seed companies working to address the dramatic recent decline of honeybees.
Other members of the Honeybee Health Coalition include California almond growers, Ducks Unlimited, Monsanto and the United Soybean Board.
Agricultural production has been threatened y a more than decade-long decline in commercial honeybees and their wild cousins due to habitat loss and pesticide use. Colony collapse disorder, in which honeybees suddenly disappear or die, has caused as much as one-third of the nation’s bees to disappear each winter since 2006.
