(KTVI) - All the depressed lanes in front of the arch in downtown st. Louis are closed for the weekend. The work is critical to the future of the renovations around the Archgrounds.

MoDOT is bringing in large steel beams to place over the highway. Crews will place 40 girders across the highway.  Each beam weighs 14 tons and is 100 feet long.  Crews are going to place massive beams over the depressed lanes in order to start the structure for the park over the highway project.

The city is also closing the EADS bridge to help make sure traffic moves through the detour smoothly.

The lanes will remain closed until 5 Monday morning.

After its completion, people will be able to travel from the Old Courthouse over the highway directly to the Archgrounds.

After the lanes reopen, crews will keep the ramp from westbound I-44 to the Poplar Street Bridge closed until before the morning rush on July 18th.  This closure will also be in conjunction with the work on the park over the highway project.
