(KTVI) - The swollen Mississippi River has risen above flood stage, and we believe it will continue to rise until Saturday.

In response, the Coast Guard has closed the river to recreational boat use between lock and dam 27 in Granite City and the Jefferson Barracks Bridge.

The water level has caught the attention of people driving by the Riverfront.

"It is high," Latoyahoke said. "It is running in the street and I wonder if something can be done about it."

The coast guard expects to reopen the closed section next week.
