The Chicago Cubs overcame deficits of 3-0 and 6-5 to knock off the Cardinals 7-6 in game one of their weekend series Friday at Wrigley Field. Jon Jay’s double in the first inning built the 3-0 lead. But an ineffective Joe Kelly surrendured the lead giving up a three run home run to Ryan Sweeney in the second inning. After the Cubs took a 5-3 lead, the Cardinals played long ball to tie the game on fifth inning home runs by Matt Carpenter and Matt Holliday. Oscar Taveras’ pinch hit single in the sixth inning put the Cardinals back on top 6-5. In the seventh inning, the Cubs took the lead for good on Luis Valbuena’s two run homer off Kevin Siegrist, making it 7-6 Chicago.
