KTVI)-An “American Idol” finalist has died. Michael Johns, 35, died Friday from a blood clot in his ankle. Johns was an Australian singer on Season 7 of the hit show. Johns is the first idol finalist to die since the FOX show launched in 2002.

According to TMZ, the singer had hurt his ankle and went to the doctor for unusual bruising and swelling. Doctors couldn’t find anything seriously wrong. He was sent home and died the next day.

In 2008, Johns finished eighth on the singing competition in a shocking elimination. Producers say it was one of the reasons Idol introduced the “judges’ save” the following season.

Johns is survived by his wife.

Former Idol judge Simon Cowell was among those tweeting his condolences.
