ALTON, Ill. (AP) _ A damaged lock chamber on the Mississippi River near Alton has reopened to barge traffic after being closed for nearly eight months for emergency repairs.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers office in St. Louis reopened the main lock chamber at Melvin Price Locks and Dam on Friday after it was closed in December 2013 due to corrosion of the steel cables that hoist one of the lock’s upstream lift gates.

New cables have since been installed as part of a $4 million repair project.
