The Cardinals did it the hard way, but got a much needed win and reduced their number to win the NL Central division to just two with a 7-6 ten inning victory on Friday night in Arizona. The Cardinals fought back from an early 2-0 deficit to lead 6-2, only to see that lead evaporate in the eighth inning.

Jhonny Peralta was the hitting star with a two run double in the sixth inning to give the Cardinals a 3-2 lead. Peralta then delivered the game winning hit in the tenth inning with a run scoring single to put the Redbirds up for good, 7-6. Cardinals relief pitched Pat Neshek struggled in the eighth inning, allowing three runs and the game to be tied 6-6.

Marco Gonzales pitched a scoreless ninth inning to get the win. Trevor Rosenthal pitched a 1-2-3 tenth inning to pick up his 45th save of the season.

Earlier Friday night, the Pirates beat the Reds 3-1 to keep the heat on the Cardinals. With the St. Louis win, the Magic Number to win the NL Central division is down to two. So on Saturday, the Cardinals could clinch the division with a Pirates loss and a win of their own over Arizona.
