At least 3 tornadoes touched down in southwest Illinois Monday

Damage to homes near Orchards Golf Course, northeast of Eckerts

(KTVI)- Damage survey crews from the National Weather Service’s St. Louis office have confirmed that at least three tornadoes touched down during severe weather on Monday, October 13, 2014. All three confirmed touchdowns were in Illinois.

One tornado touched down northwest of Freeburg, IL, about a quarter mile from the intersection of Rt. 15 and Jefferson Road in St. Clair County. The EF-1 rated tornado moved north-northeast, moving through the Maple Hill subdivision and into the Orchards Golf Club before dissipating. Peak winds of 105-110 mph left a path of damage to homes and trees.

Another tornado touched down west of New Baden, IL in eastern St. Clair County. It was also rated a EF-1 with peak winds of 90-95mph. The tornado touched down very near the intersection of IL-161 and Ruth School House Road and moved north. Several farms in the area were damaged.

A third tornado was confirmed near Ruma, IL in Randolph County. This one has been rated at EF-0 with peak winds of 85mph. The tornado touched down near the far western extension of St. Patricks Road and moved north-northeast crossing IL-155 near the Pioneer Lane intersection. The tornado dissipated shortly after that.

The Enhances Fujita (EF) scale estimate the wind speed in tornadoes based on the damage they’ve done. The tornadoes are then classified by those wind speeds.
