The Cardinals on Thursday made it official with John Lackey. The team has picked up the option on Lackey’s contract. Lackey will make only $500,000 in 2015, the option year of his contract, a bargain that the Cardinals really liked when they traded Allen Craig and Joe Kelly to the Red Sox this past July. The contract is the Major League minimum salary, so very appealing for the Cardinals projected number three starting pitcher in their 2015 rotation.

Five Cardinals players became free agents on Thursday, the first day you can file after the completion of the World Series. Pitchers Jason Motte, Pat Neshek and Justin Masterson, along with 2nd baseman Mark Ellis and catcher A.J. Pierzynski all filed to become free agents.
