WELLSTON, Mo. (AP) _ Gov. Jay Nixon will be in suburban St. Louis Thursday to announce expansion of his administration’s effort to improve job and career opportunities for young people in low-income communities.

The Democratic governor will make the announcement at 1 p.m. at the MET Center in Wellston.

The need for more opportunities for minority residents has been underscored in the unrest since the shooting death of Michael Brown on Aug. 9 in Ferguson, which is near Wellston. The shooting of the black 18-year-old by a white officer has prompted scrutiny of social and economic disparities in the St. Louis region.
