JACKSON, Mo. (AP) _ A southeast Missouri animal shelter has been barred from accepting or adopting out animals for 30 days.

The Southeast Missourian (http://bit.ly/1Ebect1 ) reports that a petition filed last month in Cape Girardeau County raises concerns about the Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary. The no-kill shelter is accused of inadequate veterinary care, overcrowding and uncleanliness.

The petition was filed by Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster on behalf of the Missouri Department of Agriculture. The state’s rules require that caretakers maintain individual health records on animals older than eight weeks.

But in the complaint, animal welfare officials claim that no records could be produced to show that several animals that died or were visibly sick received veterinary care.

A phone message that The Associated Press left at the shelter Sunday wasn’t immediately returned.
