SWANSEA, Ill. (AP) _ A monument honoring eight veterans buried in a southern Illinois cemetery has been dedicated.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports (http://bit.ly/1ttfxqA) the ceremony was Saturday at Messinger Cemetery near Swansea. The eight veterans served in the Blackhawk War, Civil War and World War I.

The 3-foot-tall monument lists the names of the veterans on one side and supporters who paid to build it on the other.

Tisch Monuments of Belleville made the unpolished granite marker. Local groups worked to raise the money needed, including a grant from the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.
