BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) _ A North Carolina woman is trying to save a troubled cemetery in southern Illinois.

E. Gayle Schneider’s mother and other relatives are buried in Mount Hope Cemetery in Belleville. She would like to revive the cemetery and get the community involved to possibly create a Friends of Mount Hope Cemetery group.

The Belleville News-Democrat (http://bit.ly/1tvPh04 ) reports the cemetery is in state receivership and there are legal issues involving missing burial funds and lost transactions. Those must be resolved before the state can try to find a buyer.

Schneider says she got the idea to help when she visited the cemetery. She wrote to Belleville Mayor Mark Eckert who says he doesn’t want the cemetery to deteriorate. The mayor says volunteers have pitched in to help cut and trim the grass.
