FERGUSON, MO (KTVI) – Kids Vision for Life-St. Louis and its partner, Essilor Vision Foundation, held an event dedicated to screening, examining and providing free eyeglasses to elementary school students in the Ferguson-Florissant School District.
Each year, students from 12 districts participate in the free vision screenings. Wednesday, five optometrists from Crown Vision Center prescribed glasses to more than 120 students with vision impairment at no cost to their families.
Kids Vision for Life has been serving the St. Louis community for five years. Program Director JJ Scarbrough said, in that time, the organization has given out more than 10,000 pairs of eyeglasses.
The organization aims to identify vision impairments in young students who are learning to read. Research shows students who are able to clearly see their reading material and chalk board are more engaged and perform better in school.
