ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)-The official start of winter is still more than a month away, but the winter weather is already here. The frigid temperatures continue and our first snow is just hours away.

The cold was the concern for runners Saturday morning for the Girls on the Run 5K race. Temperatures at the start of the downtown St. Louis event were in the low 20°s.

The concern this afternoon will be the snow. Light accumulations are expected Saturday afternoon and evening with more snow expected again on Sunday afternoon. For the latest forecast from FOX 2, click here.

MoDOT, IDOT, and other road crew officials say the roads will be ready. MoDOT has been pre-treating highways since yesterday. You can see those white stripes on most highways that show the roads have already been worked over.

The snow is early this year, but not a record. The average first measureable snow in St. Louis comes around December 4 each year.

Regardless of the timing, officials in St. Louis County aren't too concerned, though they say the best course of action is to expect the worst even when it's unlikely.
