(KTVI)- Did you know that nearly 42 million Americans are currently smokers? If you're a smoker and you want to quit, today is the day. It is the 39th Annual Great American Smokeout sponsored by the American Cancer Society.

Dr. Stephen D'Orazio with SSM Health joins us with more.

Smokers are encouraged to avoid tobacco use for one day and maybe give up the habit altogether.

Tobacco use is the largest preventable cause of disease in the U.S.

This national day of recognition coincides with recent news that the cost of lung cancer screenings could soon be covered for qualifying medicare recipients.

Dr. D'Orazio says hopefully this day might encourage people to finally take that big first step to better health.
