WATERLOO, IA – A man formerly of Waterloo – was murdered in front of his wife by teenagers with hammers.

Zemir Begic, a Bosnian immigrant, was beaten to death in Saint Louis early Sunday morning. Family say they are shocked to hear about the death. Now, they’re calling for justice.

Zemir is remembered as a husband, friend and hard worker. His cousin, Amra, lives in Waterloo. She read about the news online. She remembers growing up together in Waterloo. Her brother and Zemir was close.  When he learned of the killing, “I didn’t cry until I saw my ‘ post. He was really close with him and how he expressed his grief made me tear down.”

Though police won’t confirm, Amra calls the killing a hate crime. That’s sparked protests from the Bosnian community in St. Louis and angered those in Waterloo. Now, Amra wants justice.

What do you think should happen to these kids?

“Murder in the first. I don’t know if Missouri has the death penalty. But, in this case an eye for an eye. I think that’s how everyone in the Bosnian community feels at this point.” said Amra.
