ST. LOUIS (AP) _ Discussions of the city of St. Louis re-entering St. Louis County have been paused by the unrest in Ferguson that followed the shooting death of Michael Brown by a Ferguson police officer.

St. Louis County Executive-elect Steve Stenger says he’s coming into a job that demands a change in St. Louis County government. He tells the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that his office has many issues to address and doesn’t want those issues compounded by a merger with St. Louis.

The mayor of St. Louis still supports the idea of the city rejoining St. Louis County. But his chief of staff adds that it’s imperative for the region to first regain its footing after the protests that followed a grand jury’s decision.

The grand jury declined last month to indict Ferguson officer Darren Wilson in Brown’s death.
