FERGUSON, MO (KTVI) - Some good news from Ferguson...where police officers held a Christmas party for kids Tuesday.
Officers gave more than gifts; they offered friendships to the young people. Several police organizations teamed up to sponsor the first "Ferguson Cops and Kids" party. The event was held at the Ferguson Fire Department where each child received a new outfit or jacket and a special toy...plus they made crafts and ate lunch.
Heather Misuraca of Ferguson brought her young daughter to the event. She said the party is an important part of the healing process. "It’s very important because of all the events happening in Ferguson. It’s very nice to know that the community can still come together as one and it’s all about the kids. It’s all about the kids having fun it’s about holidays and it shows them they love them," Misuraca said.
Ferguson Mayor James Knowles said in addition to gift giving, the party was a place to begin friendships. "A lot of these kids out here. Some of them may or may not get an opportunity to have what they wanted for Christmas many of them may not have had an opportunity to have a positive interaction with a law enforcement officer," Knowles said.
Ferguson police officials say money has been donated to fund more events to build relationships with young people.
