ST. LOUIS (KTVI) - Mike Matheny has worn one number with the Cardinals organization and that’s 22. He’s only worn one other number as a major league player but that’s about to change and for good reason.

The Glanvill’s and Matheny’s have been longtime family friends for many years.  Their son’s met playing triple- a Blues hockey when Sean Glanvill was 12.

In 2007 Sean was in a horrible car accident causing a brain injury.  Doctors didn't expect him to make it.  In fact, Sean fought a long hard battle surprising many doctors along the way, but it came to an end November 10th, Sean passed away at the age of 20.

Nick watched his brother Sean fight for seven years, "before the accident he was my role model, after the accident, he became even a bigger role model for me."

Mike was there by Sean’s bedside in his last days, even throughout the playoff and he was there for his funeral. The Glanvill's had no idea Mike was changing his number to honor their son until they saw the Cardinal's twitter feed Wednesday. Derek and Penny haven't had the chance to tell Mike thank you, but will have the chance when they go on vacation in a couple of weeks together.
