ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO (KTVI) - High school students in the Hazelwood School District are mourning the loss of two young friends whose car veered out of control and crashed into a street light pole at Lindbergh and Robbins Mill Road Wednesday night. The vehicle caught on fire.

The accident took place around 10 p.m. For some unknown reason, their vehicle veered off to the right side of the roadway, striking the concrete base of a street light pole. The driver side of the car was crushed, and the impact sparked a fire in the car.

When first responders arrived, they needed a salt truck to treat the road in order to navigate their way around the accident scene.

Investigators said it's unclear if the icy roads played a role in the crash.

Although the students have not been identified, social media posts said the victims were sophomores at Hazelwood Central High School and one of them played on the junior varsity football team. By noon Thursday, balloons, mementos, and messages had been tied to the light pole.

The Hazelwood School District issued the following statement Thursday afternoon: "The [district] offers its condolences to the families affected by this tragedy. Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, the district cannot comment further on the incident."

Jack Wang, a spokesman for the district, would not even confirm whether extra counselors had been brought into the high school to help students cope with the loss.

Jayme McLemore identified herself as a girlfriend of one of the victims.

"Everybody is devastated  'cause it is hard to process," she said. " He was a good person."
