Hostage situation ends at Maryland Heights hotel

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, MO (KTVI) - The two-day search for an armed robbery suspect wanted in Edwardsville ended with a standoff near Westport Plaza.

On Wednesday, Edwardsville police called 45-year-old Richard Edwards armed and dangerous. On Friday morning, he threatened to kill his wife when police confronted him at a hotel in Maryland Heights.

Edwards was holed up in a hotel room on the first floor of the Red Roof Inn. As police closed in, Edwards threatened to kill his wife.

Edwards is accused of robbing a Shell gas station at knifepoint on Sunday. Two days prior, he robbed a bank located a few blocks away from the gas station.

His mother spoke with Fox 2 on Wednesday, pleading with her son to turn himself in to authorities. Maryland Heights detectives said when they found out he was at the hotel on Friday. But when they knocked on his door, Edwards opened the room with a knife to his wife’s throat.

After talking Edwards into releasing his wife, police said he the knife to his own throat, and had to be talked out of suicide.

Edwards remains in custody at St. Louis County Jail on $50,000 cash-only bond. He’s been charged with unlawful use of a weapon and felonious restraint. He'll eventually be moved to Illinois to face charges in Edwardsville.
