CREVE COEUR, MO (KTVI) – The head of a local Ohio State Alumni chapter says getting together to watch the College Playoff Football Championship is about more than football. The group packed the Buffalo Wild Wings in Creve Coeur Monday night. There were more than 100 Ohio State alums in the crowd.
"They do a lot of volunteer work. They are interested in the betterment of the community in St. Louis and the region, as well as the university," said Bill Simon. "All the money we raise goes to scholarships."
Simon says the group has been meeting at this location to watch games for the past several years.
"I truly think the school spirit is very culturally enhancing and powerful to be around," said Ohio State Alumnus Christian Bonner.
There were a few Oregon football fans in the crowd. Hayden Lazear was celebrating his 14th birthday while cheering for his Ducks. Lazear knew this was an Ohio State gathering spot, but wanted to come to the restaurant anyway.
"I just wanted to show them how good my team was," said Lazear
One Buckeye fan said watching the game with so many fans reminded her of her time at college.
"I love Ohio State. I love St. Louis," said Katie Beth Glenn. "It's like the perfect combining of the two worlds."
One fan said it makes sense Ohio State fans would have a home field advantage in St. Louis. Ohio State is about 400 miles away. Oregon University is about 2,000 miles away.
