GRANITE CITY, IL (KTVI)- A spectacular sight this morning in the Granite City area as crews blew up part of the Old Chain of Rocks Canal Bridge. About 400 feet of the old bridge is now in the canal after a big boom about just after 10:30am.

Crews used 70 pounds of explosives to bring down the eastbound side of the Old Chain of Rocks Canal Bridge. The bridge deck was already gone-the steel truss is what came down.
People gathered on another nearby bridge to watch the explosion- many people told us they came out to see history.

Traffic was a real concern this morning. Crews completely shut down 270 between Route 3 in Granite City and Riverview Boulevard in north city. The highway was closed around 10:15am and was completely reopened by about 11:45am.

The new Chain of Rocks Canal Bridge opened both westbound and eastbound last year. There will be two other explosions within the next month or so that will take down the rest of the old structure.

Contractors have 24 hours to remove the debris from today`s demolition from the canal and get the passage way back open.
