ST. LOUIS (AP) _ A St. Charles teenager is heading home from the hospital after falling through ice at a lake and nearly drowning last month.

Fourteen-year-old John Smith was underwater for about 15 minutes before authorities were able to pull him out of Lake Sainte Louise.

Doctors and paramedics performed CPR on Smith for more than 40 minutes until he later regained a pulse. He was airlifted to a St. Louis hospital after he was stabilized.

Smith says he doesn’t remember anything from the accident in which another boy fell but wasn’t seriously injured.

He still has some scrapes on his arms and legs. His hands are sore too, but the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports not enough to keep him from texting his friends.

Smith faces several weeks of outpatient physical therapy.
