ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)- There is big news this morning that could have a significant impact on the Rams future in St. Louis. The San Diego Chargers and the Oakland Raiders have announced plans to build a stadium in the Los Angeles area that both teams would share. We know the Rams will be playing at the Edward Jones Dome for the upcoming NFL season but beyond that is unclear. The stadium being proposed by the Chargers and the Raiders is less than 15 miles south from the site where Rams Owner, Stan Kroenke announced plans last month to build an NFL stadium in the L.A. market.

Artist renderings show the proposed Chargers/ Raiders stadium in Carson, California off of Interstate 405. The stadium would be built on 168 acres with a price tag of $1.7 billion. It would be privately financed.

In a joint statement, the Chargers and the Raiders say they will continue to work with their home markets through this year but that this option helps guarantee the economic futures of the franchises. The Chargers initially approached officials in Carson about this plan nine months ago but talks intensified after Kroenke announced his proposed 80,000 seat NFL stadium in Inglewood early last month.

The news about the Chargers and the Raiders comes just one day after Missouri Governor Jay Nixon announced a deal with local labor unions to work around the clock without overtime to build the new proposed NFL stadium along the north riverfront in St. Louis. That deal would speed up construction by about a year and save $45 million on the project.

Former Anheuser-Busch President, Dave Peacock, who is spearheading the effort to keep the NFL in St. Louis, is quoted in an ESPN article saying he is encouraged and thrilled with the progress toward keeping the Rams in St. Louis.

More details on the Chargers/ Raiders stadium are set to be released later Friday.
