ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - It may be freezing outside but it’s going to be warm inside the America’s Center downtown. It will be filled with over 1,400 gymnasts this weekend.
"It's really cool to be a part of something that not many people can do. It's really difficult and fun to be able to show off,” said gymnast Victoria Meuret.
Victoria is a level 9 gymnast competing in the St. Louis Classic Gymnastics Invitational at the America’s Center this weekend. She’s been doing gymnastics for 12 1/2 years, pretty much her whole life.
Central Gymnastics Academy hosts this event every year.
"We have over 30 gyms from 6-7 different states coming from all around. It's not just the ones here Missouri. We have Illinois, Alabama, and Michigan. We have people from all over the Midwest coming here to compete," said Samantha Newman, Director of Development for Team Central.
This 3 day competition is one of the largest gymnastics meets in the history of St. Louis.
"Gymnasts are set in their groups by levels. And these are levels 3-10 and also excel,” said Newman. “They are competing about 5-7 times a year and they're trying to make their way to state, and then to regional and to the national championship with the junior Olympics."
Parents debating about signing their kids up for gymnastics should definitely bring them this weekend.
"It's an individual sport and a team sport all wrapped into one. And it keeps them healthy and happy and they get so confident when they can walk. I mean being able to do a cartwheel on a beam that's just amazing stuff," Newman stated.
