GRAY SUMMIT, MO (KTVI) – We now know what caused Interstate 44 to get shut down eastbound Wednesday near Gray’s Summit.

The highway patrol tells us a 17-year-old man in a Camaro lost control just east of the Gray Summit exit and struck the side of a tanker trailer, rupturing the truck’s tanks. That’s what led to diesel fuel on the road.  The Camaro then hit another truck and debris then stuck another vehicle in the area.

The driver in the Camaro was the only one injured. He was taken to mercy hospital with moderate injuries.  The patrol tells us he will likely face at least several traffic tickets.

The road is now back open.
