JUPITER, FL (KTVI) – Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright will not miss much time in spring training after a medical examination Thursday revealed he was suffering an abdominal strain.

Wainwright, who traveled to St. Louis for a visit with Dr. Michael Brunt of Washington University, said he felt a twinge earlier in the week when he was re-racking a 45-pound weight. The pitcher told reporters on Wednesday that he only experienced discomfort when running and not throwing.

Cardinals GM John Mozeliak said Wainwright would likely only need three starts in spring training to be ready for the April 5 season opener.

Wainwright will be back in Jupiter on Friday and is expected to start throwing again.
