Who succeeds Tom Schweich as state auditor?
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) – Missouri law says Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon will have to appoint a new state auditor after the death of Auditor Tom Schweich.
Police say Schweich died Thursday from an apparent suicide.
State law says the governor shall immediately appoint a new auditor when a vacancy occurs to fill the office for the rest of the term until a new auditor is elected.
Schweich was re-elected to a second four-year term in November and announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for governor in January.
A spokesman for Nixon’s office said no one has been appointed and declined to comment further.
