BELLEVILLE, IL (KTVI) - The plan for a convention center, hotel and restaurant complex in Belleville is now one step closer to becoming a reality. The city council approved nearly $8 million dollars in tax increment financing last night.  Only one of the council members voted against the measure.

The development will include the Hofbrauhaus Brew Pub and will be built across from the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows.

"We are going to concentrate 9 restaurants in an area, I just don`t see the numbers I just don`t.  I hope it works, we need a hotel in Belleville, we need a convention center, if this pans out it is going to be something wonderful but right now I just don`t see how we are going to have the numbers to support nine restaurants." said Mike Buettner.

"I think for that part of town and the shrine it is going to mean more people coming its direction, more people seeking things they maybe didn`t even realize they were looking for." said Chris Diel.

Supporters say the city will benefit from the half million dollars a year in new sales tax revenue. Groundbreaking is expected in four to six weeks.
