ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – Approximately 116 barges broke loose and went adrift on the Mississippi River early Saturday morning, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The barges broke loose just before 7 a.m. between the Jefferson Barracks Bridge and Sauget, Illinois.

The U.S. Coast Guard closed the river to all traffic while tugboats collected the loose barges.

No injuries were reported. There was no damage to critical infrastructure.

An investigation is underway to determine how the barges came loose in the first place. The coast guard also established a safety zone on the river between mile marker 165 and mile marker 176. No ship may enter, leave, or move within this safety zone without authorization from the Coast Guard Captain of the Port of St. Louis or a duly designated representative.
