CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) – The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for southeast Missouri along the Mississippi River, but expects only minor flooding to occur.

The weather service says the warning for Cape Girardeau County and surrounding counties in Missouri and Illinois begins Monday, when the Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau is expected to rise 1 1/2 feet above flood level, which is anything above 32 feet.

The flood warning also applies for Perry and Scott counties in Missouri and Union and Alexander counties in Illinois.

Sean Poulos of the National Weather Service told The Southeast Missourian that by Wednesday evening, the river would likely fall below flood stage, but that depends on how many storms hit the area Monday and Tuesday.
