ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – Are U-Haul trucks sitting ducks for thieves, in St. Louis business parking lots? One Detroit native thinks so after someone hauled off his U-Haul in south St. Louis city.

It happened near the 1-44/ Hampton area at red roof plus where a man from Detroit was traveling through on his way to California delivering furniture as part of business trip, but then it all went bad.

John Boyes stopped in St. Louis twice before with no problems working for He arrived at the red rood plus at about 1 am not thinking anything but things changed quickly at 3:30 am my U-Haul truck was stolen.

He called police made a report and hoped for the best.  After two hours the truck was found but not in the condition he desired.

It was broken open, valuable stuff taken, found behind used furniture store

John was devastated, then surprised to see how quickly it was taken after watching video with red roof plus manger, video we requested from police but were not given.

She showed me video and it took about 3 minutes for guys to get. They were professionals.

When the responding officer showed up; according to John he said something that caught his attention.

It only took 3 minutes to steal the truck that borders on impressive.

The cop that was there told me it was the second time they recovered a truck in the same parking lot done same way. He also says a U-Haul official told him 10 trucks in 6 months in the St. Louis area had been stolen.

St. Louis police tell me this is the only U-Haul truck robbery they are aware of, the Red Roof Plus manager and U-Haul did not return calls to answer questions. John from Detroit, says he won’t stop in St. Louis anymore.
